Founded in 2010 by Christy Turlington, Every Mother Counts is dedicated to making pregnancy and childbirth safe for every mother everywhere. When visiting Every Mother Counts' website you get a very real picture of just how staggering the statistics surrounding complications that result during child birth and pregnancy without adequate health care are. On a global level:

303,000 Women Die Every Year As A Result Of Complications During Childbirth

That's 1 Woman Every 2 Minutes

Of These Deaths 98% Are Preventable.

You might feel far removed from the problem, but the statistics in the United States are not any more comforting:

The U.S. Ranks 60th In The World In Terms of Maternal Health

2 Women Die Everyday From Complications Related To Pregnancy and Childbirth

What is Every Mother Counts doing to address the problem. Their aim is to inform, engage, and mobilize new audiences to take actions and raise funds that support maternal health programs around the world.  Take a look at their Completed Grants page where you can learn about how they established a laboratory to diagnose and treat indirect causes of maternal death in Indonesia, or where they provided solar electricity to clinics in Nepal. Then check out their Current Grants ranging from training indigenous students from rural areas to become professional midwives in Guatemala to providing prenatal care and childbirth education for low-income at-rish mothers in central Floria. And they have something for those of you that want to get involved with a cause and be active at the same time - join EMC by choosing one of three "runner's journeys"
